How the Show Works

Four steps from the door to the ring.

  1. Arrive Early and Try On a Haori

Shows start at 13:00 and 18:00, with doors an hour before; arrive at least 15 minutes early, or 40 minutes early for professional kimono dressing. Trying on a haori jacket is free, and large luggage can be stored.

  2. Watch the Show

About 50 minutes of sumo's history, rules, rituals and etiquette, explained in English and Japanese, ending in live bouts between former professional wrestlers.

  3. Step Onto the Ring

After the show, learn the shiko stamp and the suri-ashi sliding step on a mat ring the size of a professional one. A friendly bout with a former wrestler is optional; if many people want one, challengers are drawn by lottery, with children first where possible.

  4. Eat, Then Take Photos

Depending on the package, you get chanko nabe, sushi or halal Japanese Black Wagyu sukiyaki, with popcorn and either one drink or unlimited drinks. It ends with a photo session with the wrestlers.

An Independent Guide to Sumo in Osaka

Sumo in Osaka: The March Tournament, and the Shows the Rest of the Year

When professional sumo comes to Osaka, how to get tickets, and how the eight shows by former wrestlers compare on price, place and food.

Outside March there is no professional sumo in Osaka, so the way to see it is a show by former professional wrestlers, and the fullest is Ochiizumibeya’s, from $81 as of October 2026: live bouts, your own turn in the ring and a meal. It is near Rinku Town Station, one stop from Kansai Airport and about 39 minutes from Nankai Namba by airport express, so it suits the day you fly in or out. For a show in the city, the shorter options below start at $29.

The tournament, or a show

Professional sumo holds six tournaments a year, each over 15 days: January, May and September at the Kokugikan in Tokyo, March in Osaka, July at IG Arena in Nagoya and November at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center. Osaka’s is at EDION Arena Osaka, the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium, a short walk from Namba Station. The 2026 tournament ran from 8 to 22 March. The next runs from 14 to 28 March 2027, with tickets on sale from 6 February 2027.

Visitors can buy through Ticket Oosumo English, the Japan Sumo Association’s ticket service. It takes credit cards only and adds ¥2,000 per ticket, you print the tickets at a Seven-Eleven in Japan, and a lost ticket means no entry. Bouts start in the morning, the top division comes on around 14:00 and the day ends around 18:00. For scale, chair seats for the November 2026 tournament in Fukuoka cost ¥2,000 to ¥6,000, and four-person boxes ¥32,000 to ¥56,000.

The rest of the year, every show is by retired wrestlers. Japan’s sumo stables are all in and around Tokyo, so stable visits are a Tokyo plan, not an Osaka one.

Ochiizumibeya suits families and anyone near the airport. Its mat ring is built with women, children and beginners in mind; bouts go by lottery when demand is high, and the VVIP package guarantees one guest a challenge. Former ozeki Konishiki supervises the show but does not appear in regular performances. The front-row package adds Japanese Black Wagyu sukiyaki, from $126.

Japan Guide Star’s show suits a short slot in the city: about 90 minutes at Sumo Studio Osaka by Hanazonocho Station, with an English MC, training drills, a one-round bout and limited spots to take on a wrestler. The same operator runs a second show in a sports-bar setting, from $66.

Kaminari Ichimon is the cheapest, from $29: 90 minutes with an English MC, a program designed by a former educator, and a real mawashi to wear in the ring, with a T-shirt and shorts lent. Its 8:30 show serves a wrestlers’ breakfast.

Sumo Hall Hirakuza is the central choice: 180 seats on the 8th floor of Namba Parks, three minutes from Nankai Namba Station. The 17:00 and 20:00 shows come with a bento or snack and a drink, and the 13:30 workshop adds training in the ring and a bowl of chanko nabe. Challengers are drawn by lottery.

Practical: timing, food and clothes

Timing. Ochiizumibeya’s shows start at 13:00 and 18:00, with doors an hour earlier. The main show lasts about 50 minutes; ring time and photos follow.

Food. Lights dim during Ochiizumibeya’s show, so eat before it starts. Chanko is shared per table, and vegetarian or gluten-free meals may be possible with advance notice.

Clothes. Wear something you can move in if you plan to wrestle. The activity is light, but it carries a small risk of injury, so take part at your own pace.

A sumo afternoon pairs well with Osaka Castle in the morning, and the Osaka itinerary shows where both fit. For another side of Japanese ritual, try a tea ceremony in Osaka.
