How the Street Kart Drive Works
From the documents you need at home to the last corner of Namba.
Book, Then Check Your Documents
Street Kart emails the details within 24 hours of booking. Before you travel, get a 1949 Geneva Convention driving permit in the country that issued your licence; it cannot be obtained online once you are in Japan.
Suit Up at the Shop
Show your permit and passport, choose a costume, and take goggles and a raincoat if the weather turns. Sandals, flip-flops, slippers and high heels are not allowed.
Drive the Minami Loop
Follow the guide through America-mura, Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori and Namba in a line of karts, in ordinary traffic, on the left-hand side of the road.
Take the Photos Home
The guide photographs the drive, and the photos are part of the price. Video footage needs an action camera, rented separately with a memory card and mount.

An Independent Guide to Osaka Go-Kart Tours
Street Kart Osaka: What the Drive Is, and Who Can Take It
Four guided go-kart tours compared on route, price and group size, with the permit rules Japan's National Police Agency sets for visiting drivers.
Street Kart’s Original Street Kart Experience is the Osaka go-kart drive to book: a guided line of karts through America-mura, Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori and Namba, rated 4.9 from 303 reviews, from $50 a person as of October 2026. It comes with one condition that matters more than the price. You drive on public roads, so you must bring a driving permit Japan accepts, and without one you cannot take part.
What the drive is
A guide leads, and each driver follows in a kart, in normal city traffic. Under Japan’s Road Traffic Act these public-road karts count as ordinary motor vehicles, so the law asks for a car licence valid in Japan, and Japan drives on the left. Street Kart’s drive is titled one hour but runs to about 1.5 hours in all. The price covers the kart, fuel, an English-speaking guide, a costume, goggles, a raincoat and photos; an action camera for video is extra.
Street Kart is the company’s name. It is not Mario Kart and has no tie to Nintendo or its games. The firm, then called MariCar, was sued by Nintendo over character costumes; Japan’s IP High Court set damages at ¥50 million in 2020, and the Supreme Court turned down the last appeal in early 2021.
The licence rule: read this before you book
Japan’s National Police Agency allows three ways to drive as a visitor, and the kart tours ask for the same documents.
- An International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Japan does not accept permits issued under other treaties, such as the 1968 Vienna Convention.
- A licence from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, plus a Japanese translation. For these six, no permit is used. The translation must come from the licence’s issuing authority or its embassy or consulate in Japan, or from JAF or one of the other bodies Japan designates.
- A Japanese licence.
The permit has to be the paper booklet, from the country that issued your licence, obtained before you travel. All four operators ask for the physical booklet, and two warn against permits bought online. You can drive on a permit or translation for one year from the day you land in Japan, or until the permit expires, whichever comes first; a permit lasts a year from issue. If your country issues no Geneva Convention permit and is not on the translation list, you cannot drive in Japan. Bring the physical documents and your passport.
The Osaka kart tours compared
| Tour (operator) | From | Rating (reviews) | Length | Max group | Route |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Street Kart Experience (Street Kart) | $50 | 4.9 (303) | About 1.5 hours | Not given | America-mura, Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori, Namba |
| Guided Go Karting Tour in a Funny Costume (Akiba Kart) | $53 | 4.7 (287) | 1 hour | 6 | Namba, America-mura, Dotonbori, Tsutenkaku |
| Go Kart Tour on Osaka Streets with Guide (JAPANKART) | $63 | 4.6 (69) | 1.5 hours | 10 | Tsutenkaku, Abeno Harukas, Osaka Castle, Midosuji, America-mura, Namba |
| Premium Go-Kart City Tour (Monkey Adventure Kart) | $48 | 4.7 (18) | 75 minutes | 4 | Tennoji, Tsutenkaku, Nihonbashi, Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori |
Prices, ratings and review counts as of October 2026; operators change prices, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
Street Kart can be cancelled free only up to 7 days ahead; the other three up to 24 hours ahead. Akiba Kart and JAPANKART give no refund to a driver who arrives without valid documents.
Who each one suits

See this tour →Street Kart suits a first drive: the busiest shopping and nightlife streets and the longest review record. Book once your dates are firm, since a refund needs 7 days’ notice.
Akiba Kart suits anyone who wants Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku in the frame. Insurance for property damage and injury is included, groups stop at six, and drivers must be 150 to 185 cm tall and under 100 kg.
JAPANKART covers the most ground, passing Abeno Harukas and stopping at Osaka Castle. It runs a lead car in front and another car behind, and lends jackets in the rainy and colder months.
Monkey Adventure Kart is the cheapest and caps groups at four. A GoPro costs ¥3,500 extra and an edited Insta360 video ¥13,500.
Practical: timing, weather, what to wear
Age. Street Kart, JAPANKART and Monkey Adventure Kart set 18 as the minimum driving age. Street Kart is not suitable for pregnant women or people with back problems.
Shoes. Wear closed shoes. Street Kart and JAPANKART bar sandals, flip-flops and high heels, and both bar alcohol.
Rain. Akiba Kart cancels in heavy rain and lets you rebook free, or refunds you if no other date works. Street Kart hands out raincoats; Monkey Adventure Kart asks you to contact them.
Timing. Akiba Kart asks drivers to arrive 20 minutes early for the briefing. Dotonbori’s signs are lit after dark, so an evening slot shows the street at its brightest. To build it into a day, see the Osaka itinerary; for another evening that needs no licence, see the Osaka sumo shows.
Osaka Must Do is an independent guide. It has no tie to Street Kart, Akiba Kart, JAPANKART, Monkey Adventure Kart or Nintendo, or to GetYourGuide, which sells the tours.

Check AvailabilityFAQ: Street Kart and Go-Kart Tours in Osaka
Prices, routes, the driving permit rules and what happens in the rain.
Street Kart's Osaka drive costs from $50 a person as of October 2026. That covers the kart, fuel, an English-speaking guide, a costume, goggles, a raincoat and photos; an action camera, memory card and mount for video cost extra. The other three Osaka kart tours run from $48 to $63, and the Street Kart drive is the one with the most reviews.
There is no Mario Kart in Osaka: the street kart drives are guided go-kart tours with no tie to Nintendo or its games. Nintendo won its case over character costumes against the company then called MariCar, with damages of ¥50 million set in 2020 and a final appeal rejected in early 2021. As a way to see Minami from the road, the Street Kart drive is rated 4.9 from 303 reviews as of October 2026.
Four operators run guided public-road kart tours in Osaka: Street Kart, Akiba Kart, JAPANKART and Monkey Adventure Kart. Akiba Kart sets off from Namba, Monkey Adventure Kart from Ebie in Fukushima Ward, and the routes cover Dotonbori, America-mura, Shinsekai and, on JAPANKART's tour, Osaka Castle. The Akiba Kart tour is the one that passes under Tsutenkaku.
Yes, unless your licence is Japanese or from one of six places whose drivers use a Japanese translation instead. The karts drive on public roads, where the Road Traffic Act treats them as ordinary motor vehicles, so every driver needs a car licence valid in Japan. Without the right physical documents you cannot drive, and on the JAPANKART tour you also lose the fee.
Only permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, in the paper booklet form. Permits under the 1968 Vienna Convention are not valid in Japan, and neither are documents bought online from private sellers. A permit is valid for a year from issue, and you can drive on it for one year from landing in Japan; see the Monkey Adventure Kart tour for one operator's full document list.
Your own licence plus a Japanese translation of it, not an International Driving Permit. The same applies to licences from Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan. The translation can come from your licence's issuing authority, your country's embassy or consulate in Japan, or a body Japan designates such as JAF, and you carry it with the original licence on the Street Kart drive or any other tour.
No: a Geneva Convention permit has to be issued in the country that issued your licence, before you travel. Japan does not issue them to visitors, and the kart operators say a permit cannot be obtained online while travelling. Check your documents before booking the Akiba Kart tour, which cancels without refund if the permit is missing or invalid.
Eighteen or over on Street Kart, JAPANKART and Monkey Adventure Kart. Akiba Kart sets size limits instead: drivers must be 150 to 185 cm tall and under 100 kg. Street Kart is not suitable for pregnant women or people with back problems, so check the limits on the Street Kart drive before you book.
Yes: public-road karts are registered as ordinary motor vehicles under Japan's Road Traffic Act. That is why each driver needs a car licence valid in Japan, and why the tours keep to normal traffic rules on the left-hand side of the road. JAPANKART runs a lead car and a car behind the karts, and the Akiba Kart tour includes insurance for property damage and injury.
Light rain usually does not stop the drive, and heavy rain can. Akiba Kart cancels in heavy rain and lets you rebook free, or refunds you if no other date works. Street Kart hands out raincoats, JAPANKART lends jackets in the rainy and colder months, and Monkey Adventure Kart asks you to contact them, so the Akiba Kart tour has the clearest rain policy.
Closed shoes and clothes you can drive in; the costume is provided. Street Kart and JAPANKART do not allow sandals, flip-flops, slippers or high heels. Monkey Adventure Kart offers lockers for your bags, and the Monkey Adventure Kart tour includes free use of its costumes.
Dotonbori, the canal-side street of giant signs in Minami, is the usual answer. Three of the four kart tours drive through it, along with Shinsaibashi's shopping streets and America-mura next door. For what to do there on foot, see the Osaka itinerary.
Yes, but Street Kart needs 7 days' notice for a full refund, while the other three need 24 hours. Arriving without valid driving documents is not a cancellation: Akiba Kart and JAPANKART give no refund in that case. Plan the Street Kart drive once your dates and documents are settled.
