At an izakaya: kitsune udon, yakitori, chicken wings and nagaimo, then kushikatsu, the lightly fried skewers of meat and vegetables.

  3. A Traditional Restaurant and a Gyoza House

Nikudoufu, a beef and tofu stew, more yakitori and mochi with a drink, then a gyoza dumpling specialist.

  4. Finish with Tonpeiyaki

The last eatery serves tonpeiyaki, a pork omelette, with edamame, karaage fried chicken and a Japanese pancake, plus your third drink.

Plan the Days

An Osaka Itinerary for One, Two or Three Days

What to do each day, when the Amazing Pass pays for itself, and the one booking worth making early.

For a first visit, give Osaka two full days plus a third for Universal Studios Japan or a day trip, and book one thing ahead: an evening food tour, such as the 3-hour Shinsekai tour with 15 dishes and three drinks, from $82 as of October 2026. The rest of day 1 is free, bought at the door, or covered by a pass you buy direct.

Day 1: the castle, Umeda and Dotonbori

9:00, Osaka Castle. The park is free and open at all hours. The tower museum opens at 9:00 and costs ¥1,200, with last entry at 17:30; a lift runs to the fifth floor and stairs take you to the eighth. Osaka Castle tickets compares the ticket with the guided walks.

Early afternoon, Umeda Sky Building. It is a 7-minute walk from JR Osaka Station. The Kuchu Teien deck fills the 39th and 40th floors and an open-air roof 173 metres up. Adults pay ¥2,000 and children aged 4 to 12 pay ¥500, at the 39th-floor counter or online through the building’s own site. The roof can close in heavy rain.

Dusk, Dotonbori and Hozenji. Walk the canal under the Glico Man sign, splash the moss-covered statue at Hozenji, and take the 20-minute Dotonbori river cruise, from $13, if you want the neon from the water.

Evening, the food tour. Five Shinsekai eateries, from a takoyaki stall to a gyoza specialist. It cannot cater for vegans or anyone with gluten intolerance.

Make day 1 your Amazing Pass day

The Osaka Amazing Pass is not sold here; you buy it on your phone from its own website. It costs ¥3,500 for one day or ¥5,000 for two, covers Osaka Metro and city buses, and gets you into about 40 sights. Day 1 is where it pays:

  • The castle tower is included, instead of ¥1,200.
  • Umeda Sky is free if you enter before 15:00, and 10% off after that, instead of ¥2,000.
  • The Tombori River Cruise is included; you swap the pass for a timed boarding ticket at the pier on the day. It is a different boat from the cruise sold on this site.
  • Tsutenkaku tower’s observation deck in Shinsekai is included.

The castle and Umeda alone come to ¥3,200 before a single train. Each sight counts once per day. If you will only ride the metro, the Enjoy Eco Card costs ¥820 on weekdays and ¥620 at weekends and on holidays.

Day 2: pick one lane

  • Theme park. Universal Studios Japan takes the whole day. The ticket is dated, non-refundable and from $59, and Super Nintendo World needs a timed-entry ticket from the park app. USJ tickets compared.
  • Culture. A morning tea ceremony (45 minutes to 3 hours, from $18), an afternoon in kimono, and a 90-minute sumo show from $29. The real sumo tournament only comes to Osaka in March.
  • Driving. A street kart convoy on public roads, if you carry the right driving permit.

In the evening, go back to Shinsekai for kushikatsu (one dip per skewer in the shared sauce), or see teamLab Botanical Garden in Nagai Park after dark, from $14.

Day 3: out and back

Kyoto is 15 minutes from Shin-Osaka by bullet train, or about 30 minutes from Osaka Station for ¥580 on a JR special rapid. Nara is about 30 minutes from Namba by Kintetsu limited express, and Hiroshima about 80 minutes from Shin-Osaka by Nozomi. Day trips from Osaka compares the guided versions. Come back for a soak: Osaka’s onsen start with a $6 city spa ticket.

Osaka in one day

Castle at 9:00, Kuromon market for lunch, Umeda Sky before 15:00 on the pass, Dotonbori and Hozenji at dusk, the food tour at night. If you would rather be led, the Hotspots walking tour covers Namba, Hozenji Yokocho, Dotonbori and Kuromon in 3 hours, from $41.

The 15-dish tour suits a first night, when you do not yet know what to order. Hungry Osaka’s tour covers the same district with up to 15 tastings and four drinks, but it cannot cater for vegetarians and does not take children under 10. The walking tour is an orientation, not a meal: the food is one takoyaki snack and a can from a vending machine. The cruise is short and turns back at Nihonbashi Bridge, so treat it as a 20-minute view, not an outing.

Getting around and paying

Osaka Metro, Kintetsu, Nankai, Hankyu and Hanshin take contactless credit card taps at the gates; JR does not. Tipping is not expected in Japan. Most tours here cancel free up to 24 hours ahead, but the castle tower ticket and the USJ ticket cannot be refunded.

Osaka Must Do is an independent guide. It has no tie to the operators named here, to the Umeda Sky Building or the Osaka Amazing Pass, or to GetYourGuide, which sells the tours.

"An excellent experience. This tour is a must-do if you come to Osaka."

Carmen Carrasco Chile

"What an incredible experience! Kai was honestly one of a kind and made our Osaka food tour such a highlight of our trip. From the moment we met, he was warm, friendly, energetic and so much fun to be around. His enthusiasm was infectious, and the entire evening felt more like exploring Osaka with a friend than being on a tour. Everything was so well organised, from his excellent communication and punctuality to the way he genuinely engaged with everyone in the group. He was incredibly attentive, making sure everyone felt included, comfortable and part of the experience. Kai has such a genuine passion for what he does, and it really shows. An amazing evening filled with delicious food, plenty of laughs and great company. Couldn’t recommend him highly enough. If you’re visiting Osaka, do yourself a favour and book with Kai! 🥹"
