Kimono Rental in Osaka: Rentals, Photoshoots and the Rules
Six kimono experiences compared on price, return time and what is included, with the difference between kimono and yukata and the one rule never to break.
For kimono rental in Osaka with professional photos, book Studio Norluss’s private kimono photoshoot in Higashi-Shinsaibashi: dressing, a photographer for your group alone and every image file from the session, from $95 a person as of October 2026. It is rated 4.8 from 31 reviews. If you only want to wear a kimono around town for the day, a plain rental starts at $18.
Kimono or yukata?
A yukata is a kind of kimono. Yukata are light, mostly cotton and casual, and are worn in summer, to festivals and fireworks. A kimono is heavier and more formal, worn over a juban undergarment with tabi socks. Most of the Osaka shops below offer both, and some switch to yukata in summer.

Who each one suits
Pick by what you want to leave with:
Studio Norluss Photoshoot
Private, with every image file. Hair and makeup are extra.
Check dates →Kimono or Yukata Rental
400 to 500 kimono and yukata, with hair and photos as add-ons.
See this rental →WARGO Kimono and Yukata
Over 100 kimono, plus sizes, dressing and a simple hairstyle included.
See this rental →Studio Norluss suits couples and anyone who wants the photos more than the walk. Makeup (¥6,600), hair (¥3,300), prints (¥3,300) and retouching (¥11,000) are extras, so the full look costs well above the base price.
The all-day rental suits a day out in Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori and Namba, with anime designs among the stock and an outdoor photographer as an add-on. Return it by 17:00 or pay ¥1,000 a person for every 20 minutes late; after 18:00 it cannot go back the same day.
WARGO suits families, with plus sizes in stock. Dressing usually takes under an hour, but expect a wait at busy times, especially if you book after 15:00 the day before.
Kimono BOTAN puts you in a rickshaw for 30 minutes through Shinsekai, and the driver takes photos on your phone. Keep the kimono until 18:00 for ¥1,000 more.
Liulian Travel is the other private shoot: a photographer and an English-speaking guide take you through Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi-suji, and you get every original plus a set of retouched images. Allow about two hours for dressing and hair before the shoot, and arrive with your makeup done.
The Sheraton Miyako tea ceremony gives you a kimono that goes over your own clothes for a 75-minute ceremony in the hotel’s 4th-floor tea room. The Osaka tea ceremony guide compares it with six other sessions.
The rules that matter
- Left over right. Close the kimono with the left side over the right. The reverse is only for dressing the dead, so keep it that way if you adjust it later.
- Underneath. The rentals supply the undergarments; WARGO’s set includes a long under-robe and a collar stiffener. The Sheraton’s kimono goes over your clothes.
- Return times. Kimono go back the same day: 17:00 at the all-day rental, 17:30 at Liulian, 18:00 at WARGO. A next-day return costs extra or needs a deposit.
- Damage. Permanent stains, tears and burns are charged for cleaning or repair, so keep food and drink away from the fabric.
- Sizes. Kimono are cut to Japanese proportions. At Liulian the choice narrows for women over about 175 cm or with a waist over 100 cm, and for men over about 185 cm or a 125 cm waist. The all-day rental is not suitable above 91 kg.
Can a foreigner wear a kimono?
Yes. Japan’s national tourism organisation promotes kimono and yukata experiences to visitors, and these shops are set up for them, with staff who speak English, Chinese or both. Wearing it well is the courtesy that counts: left over right, a neat collar and care with the fabric.
Where to wear it
Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori are the backdrop for both photoshoots, and Shinsekai, under Tsutenkaku, for the rickshaw. Liulian’s studio stores luggage free, which helps on a travel day. To plan the rest of a Minami day around it, see the Osaka itinerary.
Osaka Must Do is an independent guide. It has no tie to Studio Norluss, WARGO, Kimono BOTAN, Liulian Travel, the Sheraton Miyako Hotel Osaka or the other operators named here, or to GetYourGuide, which sells the experiences.

What Recent Guests Say
"Excellent! It's a lot of fun and doesn't take long. Super friendly staff, fun moments during the photo shoot. I never thought it was so complex to wear a kimono! It's really worth doing this experience, either in the studio or outside at your place, if you want to pay a little more"
"it was great!! nice staff working there and very helpful with posing and such! the photographer was also very good! i am happy with all the pictures and how the make up/hair was styled by the stylist"
"Apart from a few minor language difficulties here and there, it was a great experience with friendly and competent people who guided us through the shoot and all the preparations. At the end, we were given a USB stick with all the pictures and a printed photo to take home. The USB stick cost extra, but it was worth the money. A very nice experience😊"
"The staff are very friendly and professional. Very good experience, would definitely recommend."
"A truly wonderful experience. The kimono dresser, the hairstylist, and the photographer gave it their all. First, I was able to choose a beautiful, lightweight kimono from the many patterns, then I was professionally dressed and haired. First, we took photos in the studio, and then we took a taxi to a shrine and took some amazing shots of the cherry blossoms. The pictures turned out fantastic 😊"
"Was very fun experience putting on kimonos and photo shoot was even more experiencing. would definitely recommend this to all my friends visiting Japan"
"A beautiful experience. The place is very easy to find. As soon as I arrived I was greeted by three beautiful girls, after the pleasantries the girls were very polite and cheerful as well as beautiful. While one of them did my make-up, very good by the way, we joked a bit and talked about our respective countries. After the male-up I got ready and then she put on the Yukata that I had personally chosen beforehand. The photo shoot was carried out by the photographer and owner of the business. A very professional person who knows how to do his job very well. The girls helped him by translating and passing me the gadgets necessary for the photo shoot. An experience that you absolutely must do."

Check AvailabilityFAQ: Kimono Rental in Osaka
Cost, return times, what goes underneath, and how to wear a kimono properly.
In Osaka, kimono rentals start from $18 a person for the day as of October 2026. Packages with a hairstyle start at $30, a rickshaw ride at $69, and private photoshoots at $80 to $95. The all-day kimono or yukata rental is the cheapest, with hair styling and a photographer as paid add-ons.
Renting one costs tens of dollars; buying good silk is another world. For a day in Osaka, the WARGO rental includes kimono, obi, sandals, bag and dressing from $30 as of October 2026.
A yukata is a light, casual summer kimono, usually cotton; a kimono is heavier and more formal. A kimono is worn over a juban undergarment with tabi socks, while a yukata is the robe for summer festivals and fireworks. The Liulian Travel photoshoot switches its komon kimono to yukata in summer.
The one rule never to break: the left side closes over the right. Right over left is only for dressing the dead. Rental staff dress you correctly, so if you loosen or adjust it later, keep the same order. The Studio Norluss photoshoot has staff dress you before the camera comes out.
Kimono rentals in Osaka last the day: you return the kimono to the shop the same afternoon or evening. The all-day rental closes at 17:00 and charges ¥1,000 a person for every 20 minutes late, WARGO takes returns until 18:00, and Liulian until 17:30. The Kimono BOTAN rickshaw package ends with the ride, unless you pay ¥1,000 to keep the kimono until 18:00.
Late returns, stains, sizing and waiting time cause most of the trouble. Shops charge late fees and cleaning or repair fees for permanent stains or tears, kimono are cut to Japanese proportions, and busy slots mean a wait at the shop. None of the Osaka shops here includes makeup in the base price, so arrive with it done for the Liulian Travel photoshoot, which also asks you to allow about two hours for dressing.
You change into the undergarments the shop provides, not your own clothes. WARGO's set includes a long under-robe, waist ties and a collar stiffener, and the all-day rental includes undergarments and tabi socks. The exception is the Sheraton Miyako tea ceremony, whose kimono is designed to go over your clothes.
Yes: renting a kimono is a normal part of a visit, and Japan's national tourism organisation promotes it. The Osaka shops here have staff who speak English, Chinese or both. Wear it correctly, left over right with care for the fabric, and you can wear it to a tea ceremony too; see the Osaka tea ceremony guide.
Kyoto's temple streets are the classic backdrop, but Osaka's rentals cost less to reach if you are staying there. In Osaka, rentals and photoshoots centre on Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori, with a rickshaw option in Shinsekai. If you are heading to Kyoto anyway, see the Kyoto day trip from Osaka.
A simple hairstyle often is; makeup almost never is. WARGO and Kimono BOTAN include a hairstyle, Liulian includes one for women with long enough hair, and the all-day rental charges for it. At the Studio Norluss photoshoot, hair costs ¥3,300 and makeup ¥6,600 extra.
Yes: several shops dress children, with some limits. Liulian Travel has children's kimono from 80 cm tall, Kimono BOTAN dresses guests over 100 cm and not children under 3, and WARGO is set up for families. The WARGO rental starts from $30 as of October 2026.
Choose a shop that stocks larger sizes, and tell it your measurements when you book. At Liulian the choice narrows for women over about 175 cm or with a 100 cm waist, and for men over about 185 cm or a 125 cm waist, and the all-day rental is not suitable above 91 kg. The WARGO rental stocks plus-size kimono.
Yes: three Osaka tea sessions include the kimono in the price. The Sheraton Miyako Hotel's 75-minute ceremony lends one, from $101 as of October 2026, Bushi no Homare dresses men in hakama and women in kimono, from $42, and Sazanka Osaka's three-hour session adds calligraphy, from $95. See the Sazanka Osaka session for the longer version.
