Hiroshima Day Trip from Osaka: Worth It, and Easier Than It Looks
The trains and passes, what each tour includes, the case for going alone, and what to know before the Peace Memorial Museum.
Yes, Hiroshima is worth a day trip from Osaka, and it is a day where a tour saves real effort. Nozomi and Mizuho trains take about 80 minutes from Shin-Osaka, and one long day covers the Peace Memorial Park in the city and Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima. The Atomic Bomb Dome and the shrine were both inscribed as World Heritage Sites in 1996. Going alone is easy too. What a guided day adds is the link between the two halves, the tickets in one booking, and someone to explain the Peace Park.

Going alone: trains, passes and the ferry
- Shinkansen: Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima takes about 80 minutes on Nozomi or Mizuho, a few minutes more on Sakura. It costs ¥9,890 one way unreserved, or about ¥11,000 reserved on Nozomi or Mizuho.
- Japan Rail Pass: ¥50,000 for seven days. It covers Sakura trains; Nozomi and Mizuho need a ¥4,170 supplement each way.
- Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass: ¥17,000 for five days, for foreign visitors on temporary visitor status. It covers the Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima and the JR ferry to Miyajima, so it beats two standard tickets (¥19,780) on a single trip.
- To Miyajima: the JR Sanyo Line reaches Miyajimaguchi in 25 minutes for ¥420, then the ferry takes 10 minutes for ¥200 plus Miyajima’s ¥100 visitor tax. Rail pass holders buy the tax ticket separately at the terminal. A direct boat from the Peace Park takes 45 minutes for ¥2,400.
- Around Hiroshima: trams charge a flat ¥240.
So yes, you can tour Hiroshima on your own. Go to Miyajima first, because Itsukushima Shrine closes at 18:00 from March to 14 October and at 17:30 until the end of November, while the Peace Memorial Museum stays open until 19:00 in most months. The featured tour runs in the same order.
What each tour includes
| Tour | From | Rating (reviews) | Length | Shinkansen | Entry and lunch | Starts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hiroshima and Miyajima by Bullet Train, Amigo Tours Japan | $95 | 4.8 (381) | 8 to 11.5 hours | Return tickets in the Osaka option | Itsukushima Shrine and ferry; lunch extra | Osaka by train, or Hiroshima Station |
| Hiroshima Miyajima Bus Tour, H.I.S. | $114 | 4.7 (1,278) | 8 to 12 hours | Return tickets in the Osaka and Kyoto plans | Museum, shrine, ferry and an okonomiyaki lunch | Shin-Osaka, Kyoto or Hiroshima Station |
| Hiroshima and Miyajima UNESCO Sites, Japan Panoramic Tours | $120 | 4.9 (4,135) | 8 hours | Not included | Museum, Miyajima fees and ferry; lunch optional | Hiroshima Station |
| Private van, Travel Club Japan | $766 per group up to 6 | 4.9 (130) | 12 hours | None; about 3.5 hours by van each way | All entry and ferry tickets; an okonomiyaki bento | Your hotel in Osaka, Kyoto or Hiroshima |
| On your own | ¥19,780 return unreserved, plus about ¥1,340 for the local train and ferry | Your choice | Yours to buy | Museum ¥200, shrine ¥300 | Shin-Osaka |
Prices, ratings and review counts as of October 2026; operators change prices, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
Read the from-prices carefully. A standard unreserved return to Hiroshima costs ¥19,780, more than $95 or $114 at any 2026 exchange rate, so the headline prices cannot include the train; expect the options with Shinkansen tickets to cost more. The Japan Panoramic day never includes the train, which makes it the natural pick for rail pass holders.
Is one day enough?
For the essentials, yes: the Peace Memorial Park, the museum and Itsukushima Shrine fit into a day. Staying a night lets you see Miyajima at both tides and ride the ropeway up Mount Misen, whose lower station is ten minutes on foot from the shrine. At high tide the shrine and its great torii appear to float; at low tide the water drains out and you can walk to the gate, so check the tide times before you choose a day.
The Peace Memorial Museum costs ¥200 and opens at 7:30. Entry before 8:30 and in the last evening hour needs an online ticket bought in advance, and those can sell out. The exhibits on 6 August 1945 are hard to look at. Some call a visit dark tourism, but the park is a memorial dedicated to the victims of the bombing, and visitors are welcome to come and remember. That includes Americans. In May 2016 Barack Obama became the first sitting US president to visit, laying a wreath at the cenotaph and touring the museum.
Who should book which
Pick by what you already have:
Hiroshima and Miyajima by Bullet Train
Return Shinkansen in the Osaka option, a guide from Hiroshima Station. Lunch extra.
Check dates →Hiroshima and Miyajima UNESCO Sites
Starts at Hiroshima Station; museum, Miyajima fees and ferry included.
See this tour →Hiroshima Miyajima Bus Tour
Shinkansen in the Osaka and Kyoto plans, okonomiyaki lunch, a 7-day cancellation window.
See this tour →The bullet-train day suits travellers without a rail pass who want one booking. The guide works in English and Spanish, and museum entry is not among the inclusions, so budget ¥200 if you want to go in during the park time.
The Japan Panoramic day has the longest review record of any Hiroshima tour here, adds Daisho-in Temple on Miyajima, and suits anyone already holding a pass.
The H.I.S. day bundles museum, shrine, ferry and lunch into every plan. Staff hand over the Shinkansen tickets at the departure station but do not ride with you, and free cancellation ends seven days before.
The private van costs about $128 each when six share it, but spends roughly seven of its twelve hours on the road, against 80 minutes each way by train. It suits families who want door-to-door travel; lunch is a convenience-store okonomiyaki bento.
From Kyoto, the same trains and the H.I.S. Kyoto plan work; the Kyoto day trip guide covers that city. For the full set of trips, see day trips from Osaka, and to fit Hiroshima into a week, the Osaka itinerary.

Whether a day is enough, the bullet train and rail passes, going on your own, and what each tour includes.
Yes: the Shinkansen takes about 80 minutes, and one day covers the Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima. The Atomic Bomb Dome and Itsukushima Shrine both became World Heritage Sites in 1996. Start early, because the shrine closes at 17:30 or 18:00 depending on the season; day trips from Osaka compares it with the closer trips.
Yes, from either city: Kyoto adds only about 15 minutes to the Shinkansen ride. The H.I.S. bus tour sells plans with return tickets from Shin-Osaka or Kyoto, and the private van picks up in either city. Kyoto day trip from Osaka covers the other direction.
A day covers the essentials; a night lets you see Miyajima at both tides and go up Mount Misen. At high tide the shrine and its torii appear to float, and at low tide you can walk out to the gate. The Mount Misen ropeway starts ten minutes on foot from the shrine; the Hiroshima and Miyajima coach day covers the one-day version.
Yes: Americans are welcome, like every other visitor. In May 2016 Barack Obama became the first sitting US president to visit, laying a wreath at the cenotaph in the Peace Memorial Park and touring the museum. The bullet-train day gives the park two hours.
Some call it that, but the Peace Memorial Park is a memorial to the victims of the 1945 bombing, visited to remember. The museum's exhibits are hard to see, and every guided day here pairs it with Miyajima's shrine, which changes the mood of the day. The H.I.S. bus tour gives the museum an hour.
One full day for the Peace Park and Miyajima; two if you want the museum unhurried, Mount Misen and both tides. The guided days run 8 to 12 hours from Hiroshima or Osaka and give the museum about an hour, where they include it. The Osaka itinerary shows where a Hiroshima day fits.
The Atomic Bomb Dome, the Peace Memorial Museum, the Children's Peace Monument and Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima. For lunch, try Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, layered with cabbage, pork, noodles and egg. The Japan Panoramic day adds Daisho-in Temple on Miyajima.
They do different jobs: Osaka is the base for food, nightlife and day trips, Hiroshima the place for its history and Miyajima. You can stay in Osaka and see Hiroshima in a day, 80 minutes away by Shinkansen. The Osaka itinerary plans the Osaka side.
Yes: trains, trams and ferries cover everything. Take the JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi (25 minutes, ¥420) and the ferry (10 minutes, ¥200 plus the ¥100 visitor tax), and ride the city trams for a flat ¥240. Go to Miyajima first, since the museum stays open later than the shrine; day trips from Osaka has the train times.
About 80 minutes from Shin-Osaka on Nozomi and Mizuho trains, a few minutes more on Sakura. An unreserved seat costs ¥9,890 one way and a reserved seat about ¥11,000 on Nozomi or Mizuho. Foreign visitors can buy a ¥7,900 Sanyo Shinkansen one-way ticket, but only as an e-ticket bought outside Japan, one per passport; the bullet-train day can bundle the tickets instead.
Mostly: it covers Sakura trains, the JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi and the JR ferry, but not the ¥100 visitor tax. Nozomi and Mizuho need a ¥4,170 supplement each way from Shin-Osaka. For one trip, the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass, ¥17,000 for five days and for foreign visitors only, costs less than two standard tickets; day trips from Osaka covers the other passes.
Only some options do, and the headline prices cannot include it. Amigo Tours and H.I.S. sell plans with return tickets from Osaka, and H.I.S. also from Kyoto; the Japan Panoramic day always starts at Hiroshima Station. A standard unreserved return costs ¥19,780, more than the $95 and $114 from-prices at any 2026 exchange rate. See the H.I.S. bus tour.
At high tide, when the shrine and its gate appear to float; at low tide you can walk out to the gate instead. The tide times change from day to day, so check them for your date before you book, and note that the shrine opens at 6:30 on most days. The Japan Panoramic day spends the afternoon on Miyajima.
¥200 for adults. It opens at 7:30 and closes at 19:00 from March to July and September to November, 20:00 in August and 18:00 from December to February. Entry before 8:30 and in the last evening hour needs an online ticket bought in advance; the H.I.S. day includes museum entry.
