What is worth doing in Osaka fits in one sentence: eat your way through Dotonbori and Shinsekai, walk the free grounds of Osaka Castle, and spend your booking money on one big day, either Universal Studios Japan or a trip to Kyoto, Nara or Hiroshima, all within easy reach of an Osaka hotel. Most of what makes the city worth the trip costs nothing. This page ranks what is worth paying for, says what you can skip or buy on the day, and how many days to give it.

What is free

  • Dotonbori. The canal-side entertainment district dates back to 1612, and the Glico Man sign has hung over the water since 1935 (the current one, the sixth, is an LED board put up in 2014). Walking it costs nothing. Eating along it is how Osaka earned its word kuidaore, “eat until you drop”.
  • Hozenji. A short walk from Dotonbori Bridge, a Fudo Myoo statue is covered head to toe in moss from the water visitors splash on it for luck. The narrow lane beside it, Hozenji Yokocho, is lined with restaurants and bars.
  • Osaka Castle Park. The park covers 105.6 hectares, is open at all hours and is free. Only the tower museum and some facilities inside it charge.
  • Shinsekai. The streets around Tsutenkaku tower are free to walk. This is the place for kushikatsu, the deep-fried skewers that pass for Osaka fast food, and the one rule is no double dipping in the shared sauce.
  • Kuromon Ichiba. The market is free to walk through; you pay for what you eat.

Worth paying for, ranked

  1. A food night in Shinsekai or Dotonbori. You can eat well alone, but a guide orders, explains and picks the stalls, which matters where menus are only in Japanese. The most reviewed is a 3-hour Shinsekai tour with 15 dishes at five eateries and three drinks, from $82 as of October 2026, rated 4.8 from 2,919 reviews; it anchors the Osaka itinerary. osaka-food-tour.com compares the city’s food tours in more depth.
  2. Osaka Castle. The park is free. The tower museum costs ¥1,200 at the gate or $8 online, and opens 9:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:30. Osaka Castle tickets sets the ticket against the guided walks.
  3. One day trip. Kyoto is 15 minutes from Shin-Osaka by bullet train, or about 30 minutes for ¥580 on a JR special rapid from Osaka Station. Nara is about 30 minutes from Namba by Kintetsu, and Hiroshima about 80 minutes by Nozomi. Day trips from Osaka compares the tours; the Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima pages go deeper.
  4. Universal Studios Japan, if you like theme parks. It takes a full day and a dated ticket from $59 that cannot be refunded. The ticket does not guarantee Super Nintendo World, which needs a timed-entry ticket from the park app. USJ tickets compared.
  5. A sumo show. The real tournament comes to Osaka only in March, at EDION Arena Osaka. The rest of the year, retired wrestlers put on 90-minute shows, some with a turn in the ring, from $29. Osaka sumo shows.
  6. The city at night. The Dotonbori river cruise spends 20 minutes passing the neon, from $13. The Umeda Sky Building’s open-air roof deck, 173 metres up, costs ¥2,000 and is sold by the building itself. teamLab Botanical Garden turns the Nagai Botanical Garden into a light installation after dark, from $14.
  7. A soak. Osaka’s onsen run from a city spa ticket at $6 to day trips to Arima Onsen.
  8. A class. Tea ceremonies run from 45 minutes to 3 hours, from $18, and kimono rental starts at $18 for the day.
  9. A street kart convoy on Osaka’s public roads, from $48, if you carry an International Driving Permit. The street kart rules explain who can drive.
  10. Samurai. Osaka has armour, sword and iaido classes; osakasamuraishow.com compares the hands-on samurai experiences in the city.

What to skip, or buy on the day

The free things need no booking. Dotonbori, Hozenji, the castle park, Shinsekai and the market are walk-up.

The castle tower is optional. It was rebuilt in 1931 with donations from Osaka’s citizens and is a museum inside, with a lift to the fifth floor and stairs to the eighth. If museums are not your thing, the walls, moats and park give you the castle for free.

The Umeda Sky ticket can wait until you are there. The counter is on the 39th floor and the deck stays open until 22:30, with last entry at 22:00. The roof can close in heavy rain, so check the sky before you go up.

The Osaka Amazing Pass only pays on a full sightseeing day. It costs ¥3,500 for one day or ¥5,000 for two, lives on your phone, and covers the metro, city buses and about 40 sights, including the castle tower and the Umeda Sky deck before 15:00. If you are only riding the metro, the Enjoy Eco Card at ¥820 on weekdays and ¥620 at weekends and on holidays is cheaper. The itinerary builds a day around the pass.

USJ is skippable on a short trip unless it is the reason you came. It costs a whole day you could spend on Kyoto.

How many days to give Osaka

Two full days cover the city: one for the castle, Umeda and Dotonbori, and one for Shinsekai, a show or a class, and a food night. Add a third day for USJ or a day trip, and four or five if Osaka is your base for Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima.

Timing matters as much as length. Japan’s weather agency puts the Kinki rainy season from early June to mid-July, and September brings heavy rain from the autumn front and typhoons. October tends to be sunny and fresh, which makes it one of the easiest months for a walking-heavy city.

The food tour suits anyone who wants dinner handled, and the price covers the food and drinks. The day trips suit a stay of four days or more, when the city has had its two days.

Before You Book

Six Things to Know Before You Book in Osaka

The rules that catch visitors out: dated tickets, licences, diets, refunds and the weather.

1

USJ tickets are dated and cannot be refunded

The 1-day ticket's price tier depends on the date you choose, and it cannot be cancelled. It does not guarantee Super Nintendo World either: that area needs a timed-entry ticket from the park's app. USJ tickets compared.

2

Real sumo comes to Osaka only in March

The Grand Sumo tournament is held at EDION Arena Osaka every March, one of six 15-day tournaments a year. The rest of the year, what you can book is a show by retired wrestlers. Osaka sumo shows compared.

3

Street karts need the right licence paper

Most drivers need a booklet International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, issued at home before you travel. Licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan need a JAF translation instead, and under-18s cannot drive. The street kart rules.

4

Food tours cannot feed every diet

The two 3-hour Shinsekai food tours on this site cannot cater for vegan or gluten-free diets, and one cannot cater for vegetarians either. The Dotonbori sushi class has vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and halal menus if you ask three days ahead. Where each fits in a day.

5

The cheapest tickets are the non-refundable ones

Most tours here cancel free up to 24 hours ahead. The exceptions are tickets and shows: the castle tower ticket, the USJ ticket, the Naniwa-no-Yu spa ticket and the Hirakuza sumo show cannot be refunded, and the USJ pass with a private car refunds 40% up to 24 hours ahead. The Kyoto sights bus tour needs 2 days' notice; the Original Street Kart drive and one Hiroshima bus tour need 7. Osaka Castle tickets.

6

Plan around June rain and September storms

Japan's weather agency puts the Kinki rainy season from early June to mid-July, and September brings heavy rain from the autumn front and typhoons. The Hotspots walking tour runs rain or shine; the Dotonbori cruise is cancelled, with a full refund, in weather warnings. An onsen is the rainy-day plan.
